The ISMS-CNMCH Team

The ISMS-CNMCH is led and supported by a multidisciplinary group of research professionals with exceptional experience and expertise in conducting research in the field of nutrition and maternal and child health in Vietnam. Our senior researchers have attained advanced degrees from leading instituations in nutrition and clinical research, child development, public health, and socialmedical sciences. They have rich knowledge in study design, scientific survey methodology, and advanced data analysis techniques. Our professional panel will be formed on a case-by-case basis upon the diversified requirements of expertise of each project/study.

ISMS-CNMCH is run by a core group of researchers with years of experience in designing study; collecting, managing, analyzing data; and writing reports in nutrition, maternal and child health.

 

 

Phuong T. Pham, PhD

Dr Pham is the Centre Director of ISMS-CNMCH and serves as a senior researcher of the centre. Dr Pham received her bachelor degree in Sociology from The Academy of Journalism and Communication in 2001. She got Fulbright scholarship to support her master program from 2006-2008 in Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University. She earned her PhD. Degree in Human Development and Family Studies at the Pennsylvania State University in 2016. Over the past 16 years, Dr Pham has been the principal or Co-Investigator of many studies including quantitative research and qualitative research with a focus on family, children and women’s health and development. Dr Pham has also authored and co-authored publications in quality journals and books such as Journal of Family Issues and Encyclopedia of Family Studies.

 

 

Van Thi Truong, BPH, MA

Ms  Truong  is  in  charge  of  managing  data  collection  process and  coordinating  activities  of  ISMS-CNMCH .  Ms Truong received her Bachelor Degree in Public Health at Hanoi School of Public Health in Vietnam in 2010 and Master of Arts in Demography at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand in 2016. Ms  Truong has more  than  six  years  of experience  related  to  developing tools, supervising  and  conducting data  collection  for  many studies.  She  has participated in studies related to child nutrition, clinical trials in nutrion, pregnant women and the elderly’s health.  She  has  accumulated  much  experience in designing studies, developing data collection  tools  and managing  data quality..

Hoan Van Pham, MD, MSc., PhD in Medicine

Dr. Hoan Pham began his health education at the University of Queensland in Australia, where he earned his MPH in 1991.  He continued his education at Hanoi Medical University, where he received his MD in 1995.  In 2001, Dr. Pham completed the doctoral program and received a DrPH degree from the National Institute of Epidemiology and Hygiene in Hanoi.  His primary research interests include nutritional epidemiology, community nutrition, and food safety. 

 

 

 

Nam Truong Nguyen, MD, DrPH

Dr. Nam Truong Nguyen is the Director of the Institute of Social and Medical Studies (ISMS) and is a senior research at ISMS-CNMCH. In 1995, Dr. Nguyen received training in epidemiology at Hanoi Medical University. He has since specialized in socio medical sciences, receiving both his Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH) in Socio medical Sciences from Columbia University in New York. Dr. Nguyen has a demonstrated record of successfully leading research projects that span multiple areas of expertise, including but not limited to: HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, gender and sexuality, communicable diseases, tobacco cessation, provision of health services, nutrition, and monitoring and evaluation. He has been the Principal or Co-Investigator on over 35 research and evaluation studies in Vietnam with funding from a wide range of donors such as Abt Associates, Atlantic Philanthropies, Asian Development Bank, USAID/PEPFAR, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and National Institute of Health. Among those are fifteen large-scale surveys and thirteen qualitative research studies. Through these projects, he has gained cross disciplinary expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Currently, he is the Co-PI of a NIH grant focused on implementing tobacco use treatment guidelines in community health centers in Vietnam.


  

Minh Duc Nguyen, MD., MPH

Dr Minh, a Vice Director of ISMS, serves as a senior researcher at ISMS-CNMCH. Dr Minh received his Medical Doctor Degree at Hanoi Medical University in 1995 and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition from University of Washington in Seattle in 2005. Over past 15 years, Dr. Minh has distinguished himself in sociomedical and public health research in Vietnam, serving as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for more than 25 research studies, including lager- and small-scale quantitative surveys, qualitative studies and monitoring and evaluation studies. Through this work, he has honed his skills in designing, planning and implementing research projects.

 

 

Thu Dai Bui, MD., MSc

Dr. Thu Bui is a Vice Director of ISMS. Dr. Thu Bui contributes his long history in research and program management to the ISMS-CNMCH research team. He received a Medical Doctor degree from Hanoi Medical University in 1989 and a Master of Science (MSc) in Public Health and Nutrition from University of Indonesia in Jakarta in 1997. Dr Thu has over 20 years of experience in project and program planning and management in Vietnam, with particular expertise in monitoring and evaluation. He also specializes in policy analysis, proposal development and training. Some of the areas his research and projects have focused on include population and development, reproductive health, aging and nutrition. In addition to his work at ISMS, Dr.Thu has served as a consultant and research leader in multiple studies and projects in Vietnam, including those organized by UNFPA, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency(SIDA), and The Vietnam Ministry of Health.
