ISMS-SC Team

ISMS-SC is led by a multidisciplinary group of research professionals with exceptional experience and expertise in conducting social science research in Vietnam and its surrounding regions. Our senior researchers have attained advanced degrees from leading research institutions in fields such as sociomedical sciences, public health, development economics, public policy and anthropology. Their backgrounds have provided them with sophisticated knowledge in study design, scientific survey methodology, and advanced data analysis techniques.

Our senior researchers are supported by a team of research professionals, each with multiple years of experience in collecting, managing and analyzing data in the sociomedical and public health fields. Because each study requires different areas of expertise, our research teams are assembled on a case by case basis.

Trang Thi Nguyen, MSc

Ms.Trang Nguyen is Vice Director of Survey Center, Institute of Social and Medical Studies specializing in research coordination and data management. She has a Bachelor of Public Health from Hanoi School of Public Health and a Master of Development Economics from The Vietnam - Netherlands Master's Programme, National Economics University, Vietnam. She has gained technical expertise in data management for both quantitative and qualitative studies. In addition to data management, her strengthens include site monitoring, project management.

Currently, she is the Project coordinator of a NIH grant focused on implementing tobacco use treatment guidelines in community health centers in Vietnam.

Dung Duc Le, MA

Researcher – Data Collection Coordinator

Mr. Dung Le has a Bachelor of Public Heath from Hanoi School of Public Health and a Master from Chulalongkom University in field of Demography. Mr. Le oversees the data collection services offered by ISMS-SC. His responsibilities include handling fieldwork logistics, ensuring that data collection follows study guidelines, and controlling data quality. He brings to this role his broad experience leading and performing data collection for a variety of research studies in Vietnam. Mr. Le has participated in more than ten research studies employing a range of methodologies. Mr. Le specializes in fieldwork preparation and coordination, site monitoring, personnel management and training, and data collection techniques. Currently, he is the Project officer of a NIH grant focused on implementing tobacco use treatment guidelines in community health centers in Vietnam.

Yen Thi Pham, MA

Ms Yen Thi Pham is a researcher of Survey Center, Institute of Social and Medical Studies. She has a Master in Sociology from Vietnam National University of Social Sciences and Humanities. Ms. Pham has more than 5 years’ experience in conducting public health research and has participated in many research studies both qualitative and quantitative methods. She specializes in fieldwork preparation, coordination, site monitoring and training. Moreover, her strengthens include qualitative interviewing and qualitative data management.

Ms. Lan Anh is a researcher of Survey Center, Institute of Social and Medical Studies. She has a Bachelor of Public Health from Hanoi School of Public Health. She has 5 years’ experience in conducting public health research. Ms. Lan Anh has participated in many large scale research studies. She specializes in fieldwork preparation, site monitoring and quantitative data management. She has managed the data of many large scale surveys.

Nam Truong Nguyen, MD, DrPH

Dr. Nam Truong Nguyen is the Director of the Institute of Social and Medical Studies (ISMS). In 1995, Dr. Nguyen received training in epidemiology at Hanoi Medical University. He has since specialized in socio medical sciences, receiving both his Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctorate of Public Health (DrPH) in Socio medical Sciences from Columbia University in New York. Dr. Nguyen has a demonstrated record of successfully leading research projects that span multiple areas of expertise, including but not limited to: HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health, gender and sexuality, communicable diseases, tobacco cessation, provision of health services, nutrition, and monitoring and evaluation. He has been the Principal or Co-Investigator on over 35 research and evaluation studies in Vietnam with funding from a wide range of donors such as Abt Associates, Atlantic Philanthropies, Asian Development Bank, USAID/PEPFAR, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and National Institute of Health. Among those are fifteen large-scale surveys and thirteen qualitative research studies. Through these projects, he has gained cross disciplinary expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Currently, he is the Co-PI of a NIH grant focused on implementing tobacco use treatment guidelines in community health centers in Vietnam.

Minh Duc Nguyen, MD, MPH

Dr. Minh Nguyen, a Vice Director of ISMS, serves as a senior researcher at ISMS-SC. Dr. Nguyen received his Medical Doctor degree at Hanoi Medical University in 1995 and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition from the University of Washington in Seattle in 2005. Over the past 18 years, Dr. Nguyen has distinguished himself in socio medical and public health research in Vietnam, serving as a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for more than 30 research studies, including large- and small-scale quantitative surveys, qualitative studies and monitoring and evaluation studies. Through this work, he has honed his skills in designing, planning, and implementing research projects. Dr. Nguyen’s research specialties include nutritional epidemiology, aging, migration and behavioral research.

Associate Professor Long Thanh Giang, PhD

As senior researcher at ISMS-SC, Associate Professor. Long Giang contributes his in-depth knowledge and skills in public policy and social protection research. After earning a Master of Public Policy Master from Hitotsubashi University, Professor. Giang went on to receive a PhD in Public Policy from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Japan in 2008. His research interests are wide-ranging and include: the economics of aging, pension reforms, and intergenerational transfers; poverty alleviation and income inequality; labor, migration and remittances; human development, education access and equity; health care, health planning and health economics; M&E, impact evaluation and costing for policy intervention programs. Professor. Giang has authored and co-authored numerous publications in journals such as Development and Changes, Journal of Population Ageing, Asian Economic Journal, Asia-Pacific Development Journal, and Agriculture Economics Review.

Thu Dai Bui, MD, MSc

Dr. Thu Bui contributes his long history in research and program management to the ISMS-SC research team. He received a Medical Doctor degree from Hanoi Medical University in 1989 and a Master of Science (MSc) in Public Health and Nutrition from the University of Indonesia in Jakarta in 1997. Dr. Bui has over 23 years of experience in project and program planning and management in Vietnam, with particular expertise in monitoring and evaluation.  He also specializes in policy analysis, proposal development and training. Some of the areas his research and program projects have focused on include population and development, reproductive health, aging and nutrition. In addition to his work at ISMS, Dr. Bui has served as a consultant and research leader in multiple studies and projects in Vietnam, including those organized by UNFPA, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and the Vietnam Ministry of Health.

Phuong Thu Thi Pham, PhD

Dr. Phuong Pham has expertise and 15 years of experience in survey methodology and quantitative analyses. Her research focuses on health, human development, family studies, gender, labor market, and other development issues. She is also interested in connecting research outcomes and policymaking processes for better implementation of equality and development programs. In addition, Dr. Pham has experience in conducting training on family studies and sociological methods. She earned her BA in Sociology from the Academy of Journalism and Communication, Vietnam in 2001. She received her MSc and then PhD in Human Development and Family Studies from Pennsylvania State University, the U.S. in 2008 and 2016, respectively.
